1 -it's really fucking beautiful up here
2 -I think the mile markers are dead porcupines
3 -there is an FM radio station dedicated to the Tragically Hip
4 -there are coyote warnings on the beach

Another "you've got to be kidding me" post

According to ItHappenedtoAlexa, Bill O'Reilly will be speaking at a luncheon for their foundation. Their foundation is to honour the courage that their daughter showed when encountered with the legal system's ugly handling of rape victims.

Wait, wasn't there something about Bill O'Reilly and a rape victim a while back? Oh, yea. Bill knows why wimmin-folk get raped. They deserve it.

I hope some of you join me in pointing this out to the foundation. Here's their contact page

I nearly forgot about his sexual harassment suit. Another drop in the "Bill O'Reilly hates women" bucket.

Yea, I know.

I am breaking my pretty much never post streak. But, I think everyone should know about this story.

A clinic nurse first removed her intrauterine birth-control device without permission, says the patient in a federal action, then told her that "having the IUD come out was a good thing," because "I personally do not like IUDs. I feel they are a type of abortion. I don't know how you feel about abortion, but I am against them."

To this day, it still surprizes me that there can be such fundamentalist views on what a woman's choice is, and how someone can force their completely wrong birth control choices upon someone. I hope that with the more liberal federal administration we will see this sanctioned much less. It sounds like this nurse has done this more than once. Women everywhere should be outraged.

I think l'm getting married tomorrow...

... again.

Tomorrow is the ten year anniversary of dating for the me & my husband. He's got a friend from his hometown coming up for the weekend, we'll be going out to dinner with some friends, including one that is licensed to marry people in this county. Another one of the couples we're going out with wasn't able to make it to the last wedding. Plus, since we'll have a house guest and can't get away, we have to do something to celebrate, right?

This will be our fourth wedding. To each other. I'm going to get away from work for a little bit so we can get another marriage license, then, before dinner, we'll have another little ceremony!

oooohhhh, I need to buy something "new", don't I? I want to write new vows I think, too.

I need things.

Well, I need things in that special, lap of comfort way. I certainly won't die without this stuff. I'd like, or perhaps, I would be pleased with, maybe that's a nicer way to put it. Oh, and I'd like advice or opinions.

Anyhow, I am looking to purchase a new WAP or wireless router, a "home" NAS, but I am partial to the ones with RAID0 or 1 capabilities and print serving, and a colour laser printer (maybe). I was looking at Linksys for the first two, just the plain ole W45G/s for the wireless, unless there is some earthshattering reason to spend more than $50 on that, and then the two-bay 10/100 wired NAS. I don't think it does printing, but if there is a cheap colour laser printer that comes with a NIC (or has a cheap NIC purchased separately) I am perfectly happy with that. A lot of the NAS in a box do have the print server piece, but they are single drive.

As far as the whole home colour laser printer, that's more my husband. Between the website work & the bands, he does a lot of printing. I am still trying to work out whether this is actually cheaper that Kinko's... sure, the printer says it will print 20 sheets a day for a month or two before running out of toner, but he is printing full page -whole thing, covered in toner. Not docs or anything with a lot of whitespace.

We did get the tornado here...

Lovely, isn't it? One of the few times my husband isn't working at home (he had a meeting) and we get a tornado. Of course, it was while it was dumping buckets of rain, and I was trying to figure out how to keep the rain out of my big ass lab UPSes, as well as just plain out of the server labs (never again will I have an office on the top floor).

My aunt called me, wondering if everything was ok. She had just tried calling my house, got no answer, and worried. She had just heard about tornados touching down in Islip Terrace. Normally, my husband is home, and answers the phone, or the answering machine is on. This is when I started to worry, a little. I was just kind of wondering what was going on, I was able to access my home server from work still, I knew the basement & the cable line was ok.

So I went home. As soon as I turned on to my block, there were a few trees down. At the far east end of the block, there were bulldozers & dump trucks cleaning up. Somehow, my block in the middle was pretty much undisturbed. My patio umbrella hadn't moved. The tornado went south of us apparently. So, we're lucky-lucky. Animals are ok, house is ok, we are ok. Pretty good all around, no big injuries to life or house, in the area.

Wait... aren't they missing an "L"?

From the headline on this headline from CNN.
Novel software drives '$100 laptop'

Forget windows, folders and boxes that pop up with text. When students in Thailand, Libya and other developing countries get their $150 computers from the One Laptop Per Child project in 2007, their experience will be unlike anything on standard PCs.

Yea. I was thinking Novell. And I would have thought that was pretty cool. But alas, I am just socially inept, and care more about computers than starving children without laptops. Crap. I should make a resolution about this.

Well, that's interesting.

As I was driving in to work, the sky just looked really weird. Looked like the sun was setting to the east, and nightfall was coming up from the west. Yes, I know, it was clouds, not some rotation switch. Then later, I read this, which confirms my "weird weather day" diagnosis.

Jury duty.

While I normally would not mind so much, number one -they are sending me to bloody Riverhead. Middle of nowhere, nearly an hour away. There is a perfectly lovely supreme court up the block -might I just pop in there, instead? Number two -I have to be there at 09.30. Not a morning person. Soooooo not a morning person. Number three -I need to get my car inspected (overdue by two weeks, long story, yes, bad Kelly.) so, I will be driving the giant maroon marshmallow. Number four -it is very likely that I will spend several hours catching up with all the work I miss while there. No cameras, so my phone won'r be allowed in, and I somehow doubt that I will get an unsecured WAP for the laptop. Number five -no sharp pointy objects. I have to remember to remove my leatherman & my corkscrew before hitting security, AND later remember to add the things back in to my bag. Overall, this would appear to be a large pain in the ass. On the flip side, professional jurors may not be the way to go with the justice system, either.

Note to various LJ community members.

Please, please, please start using those silly little grammatical niceties, such as proper capitalisation of letters, punctuation marks, understanding homophones. In several communities today, I had to stop reading the post, because I was getting a headache trying to figure out what was being said. You are not cool for eschewing these things. You are just unintelligable. |33+ spelling, word substitutions, and general abuse of words is also tiresome. Thank you!

eBags suck!

So, I wanted a cute laptop bag. I found one on eBags, ordered it. Got the shipping information the next day. Tracking information, it says it has been picked up by UPS (i.e., not just "billing information received"), the usual deal. It should get here today. Yay.

This morning I woke up to an email saying the order was cancelled, they are crediting my return, but I may not get back the shipping charges. WTF? Email customer service. Get back an auto response saying, "may take 24-48 hours for a response".

Luckily, I got an answer today. Apparently, the bag is out of stock. erm. Yeaaaaaaa. Nice to explain things on the original email, rather than saying "customer returned item". I am also rather curious how I got shipping information when they say the factory is out of stock? Crappy inventory systems much? Can't deal with a database, perhaps?

In other news, it is snowing. yuk. Off to Amazon I go, looking for a different bag.

wha?!

I think they have us confused with someone else:

Blizzard watch in effect from Saturday afternoon through
Sunday morning...

The National Weather Service in Upton has issued a blizzard
watch... which is in effect from Saturday afternoon through Sunday
morning.

Snow will begin during Saturday afternoon... and become heavy at times
Saturday night. Northeast winds will also increase Saturday night to
25 to 35 mph with gusts up to 50 mph... causing blizzard conditions
along with considerable blowing and drifting of snow.

By the time the snow ends Sunday morning... accumulations should
average 8 to 12 inches... with locally higher amounts possible.
The highest totals are most likely to occur in and near New York
City... and across western Long Island.

A blizzard watch means there is a potential for falling and or
blowing snow with strong winds and extremely poor visibilities.
This can lead to whiteout conditions and make travel very dangerous.

This is new. I thought we might get some flurries, but... 8"-12"?! DAMN!

Must be time to buy milk, eggs & bread. Or my version, which is wine, cheese & cigarettes.

Li'l Miss Social Butterfly...

I've had a life recently. Now, I am tired of it. Don's had gigs the past few weekends, we've had parties to go to, other bands' gigs, people hanging out. All this, with work and then trying to keep up with house stuff makes me a sleepy girl.

I've started going to the chiro again, too. It's good, cause it forces me to leave work by 6pm, but then that means I feel guilty about showing up at 10am. I am not good at making it in by 8.30am. ugh. I expect to be cranky next week. Hopefully, I will get an answer as to whether chiro is really going to fix my back, or it I should try something else.

Stupid should hurt.

When college freshman Janet Lee packed her bags for a Christmas trip home two years ago, her luggage contained three condoms filled with flour - devices that she and some friends made as a joke.

Philadelphia International Airport screeners found the condoms, and their initial tests showed they contained drugs. The Bryn Mawr College student was arrested on drug trafficking charges and jailed. Three weeks later, she was released after a lab test backed her story, The Philadelphia Inquirer reported Thursday.

http://hosted.ap.org/dynamic/stories/C/CONDOM_BUST?SITE=1010WINS&SECTION=US&TEMPLATE=DEFAULT

Um. Yea. I would have thought they were drugs, too. I don't know what the "initial tests" were that showed the other stuff, but, putting what appears to be drugs in your luggage is dumb, and not a joke. No lawsuit for you.
